book haul, january 2026

The rain let up yesterday so I went into town to do some thrifting! I spotted some interesting knick-knaocks, like a tiny Limoges decorative bowl and some bone china stuff but nothing that wowed me (or that I wanted to haul around until I get back to the US, for that matter). I DID find a decent book selection, though! I got 5 books for £17/$22 USD, which I think is pretty good.

A stack of 5 books on a kitchen table

Titles:
1. Viva South America by Oliver Balch
2. Tales of the Alhambra by Washington Irving (comes with a soundtrack CD!)
3. Women Who Run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes
4. I Planted Trees by Richard St. Barber Baker
5. Peregrinations of a Pariah by Flora Tristan, translated by Jean Hawkes

I'm pretty sure I have at least one of these books as an ebook already, but whatever. Now I need to track down a CD player...

This year I'm doing Community Thursdays. Some of my activity will involve maintaining communities I run, and my favorites. Some will involve checking my list of subscriptions and posting in lower-traffic ones. Today I have interacted with the following communities...

* Posted "How to Restart When You've Fallen Off Your Goals" in [community profile] goals_on_dw.

* Continued checking and responding to Wishlist posts in [community profile] snowflake_challenge.  See my Granting Wishes post.

* Made my 3 nominations for the Rose and Bay Awards: Other Project in [community profile] crowdfunding. Nominations are still open through January, so if you haven't made yours yet, we could sure use more! Boost your favorite crowdfunded projects and patrons from 2025.

"A Scarf of Stars"

In winter,
on a moonless night,

the Milky Way shimmers
like a scarf of stars

wound around
night's black neck.

[personal profile] moonhare posted a lovely picture of snow, and a very amusing still life of "Snow Predicted."  It got me thinking that occasions would make a great theme for still life in general.

Challenge #11

In your own space, grant someone's wish from Challenge #5. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your own post with the wishes you granted if you feel comfortable doing so.

Okay, I actually granted wishes by commenting on folks' posts, but here's a round-up of the ones I did:

1. [personal profile] catness wanted recs for games featuring cats, so I recced Stray, Sudocats, and Cats Love Boxes, along with a mention of the kitties of Forspoken.

2. [personal profile] falena asked for book recs and voice recordings, so I recced Connie Willis and Courtney Milan, and also linked to my Twitch stream where they can watch videos of me chatting.

3. [personal profile] visualjyushi asked for FFVII icons and writing advice; I commented with both when Challenge 5 first went up.

That's enough for now--I might look through the list again later to see if there's more I can grant.

My own wishlist is here - I've already gotten some great comments but I'll link it again in case folks are feeling generous.

A friend asked about shopping for clothes over 40, with an eye toward age-appropriate and fashionable wear, given an opera subscription. That's different from my typical needs, but I'm familiar enough with wrangling clothes to have plenty of ideas ...

The hidden microbes that decide how sourdough tastes

The microbes living in sourdough starters don’t just appear by chance—they’re shaped by what bakers feed them. New research shows that while the same hardy yeast tends to dominate sourdough starters regardless of flour type, the bacteria tell a more complex story. Different flours—like whole wheat or bread flour—encourage different bacterial communities, which can subtly influence flavor, texture, and fermentation.

Today is mostly sunny, breezy, and cool.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a flock of sparrows and at least one starling.

I put out water for the birds.

Snowflake Challenge 11: Granting Wishes

This challenge is a follow up to Challenge #5. You've made your own wishlist, now it's time to grant someone else's wish from theirs! This can be as simple as answering a question to creating something from scratch, one wish or many wishes. Let your inspiration run wild!

In your own space, grant someone's wish from Challenge #5. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your own post with the wishes you granted if you feel comfortable doing so.

Be sure to check out other people's creations, whether they're granting your wish or someone else's. If you post any granted wishes elsewhere, we'd love it if you link them to this post

Crying and shipping seem all I do, yet I get through all my fanworks for my favourite ships way too quickly 😣 I always think I've created way more fanworks than I thought since it does amount to quite a lot relative to what's out there for my rare ships. Still too little by my own insatiable standards 😝 Fantasizing to not just board a large and bustling cruise ship but to enter the lost city of Atlantis lmao.

From when I started actively posting about my fannish interests, I wanted my volume and variety of fanworks to more closely reflect the level of my obsession, but I guess I get too self-conscious too soon when there appears to be few others screaming about their ships or just talking about character dynamics or character arcs. While I'm in my obsessive phase, I'm in a frame of mind to steamroll over my self-consciousness, and respond and comment on my own posts if that's what it takes to inspire and entertain myself while absorbing new influences and changing across time.

Stanford scientists found a way to regrow cartilage and stop arthritis

Scientists have found a way to regrow aging cartilage, raising hopes for arthritis treatments that could make joint replacements obsolete.

Scientists at Stanford Medicine have discovered a treatment that can reverse cartilage loss in aging joints and even prevent arthritis after knee injuries. By blocking a protein linked to aging, the therapy restored healthy, shock-absorbing cartilage in old mice and injured joints, dramatically improving movement and joint function. Human cartilage samples from knee replacement surgeries also began regenerating when exposed to the treatment
.

Well, that would be super useful ... if it's not blocked by megacorps making the current arthritis treatments. Then again, most politicians are old and would probably like to have this option, so maybe they'll tell the megacorps to fuck off for once.

Good News

Good news includes all the things which make us happy or otherwise feel good. It can be personal or public. We never know when something wonderful will happen, and when it does, most people want to share it with someone. It's disappointing when nobody is there to appreciate it. Happily, blogging allows us to share our joys and pat each other on the back.

What good news have you had recently? Are you anticipating any more? Have you found a cute picture or a video that makes you smile? Is there anything your online friends could do to make your life a little happier?

Challenge #10: Big Mood (Board)

CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU LOVE AND CREATE A MINI MOOD COLLECTION OF THREE (or more) ITEMS THAT EVOKE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT IT. You don’t have to limit yourself to visual media, or collect the items into a special format like a square (though you can if you’d like).

Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Also, feel free to entice engagement by giving us a preview of what your post covers.

I wasn't quite comfortable doing a mood board, because I didn't know where to get images from for it! Look, I care about artists/photographers/graphic designers; I am not about to do a random web search and steal their art for a frivolous purpose. I did look at Pixabay briefly for free clipart but didn't see anything that was right for the first term I searched on, which was "crying", lol.

Anyway, I ended up making a word cloud of terms and feelings from Final Fantasy XIV. And yes, "sobbing" was one of the first words I put in. There is a certain zone in this game that I sobbed my way through. No really, it took me THREE HOURS to traverse the zone and I cried for every minute of it. That's how powerful the emotions are in this game.

I cannot say enough good things about FFXIV. The story is absolutely amazing and you WILL be affected by it. The gameplay is pretty darn fun, too! I love the game to pieces and thus there was no competition here; I +was+ going to create something related to it.

If you're interested in giving FFXIV a try, let me know! I'd be glad to give pointers to any sprouts (FFXIV term for "new player").

Cow are the latest animals observed using tools, reopening the debate about animal intelligence

Researchers report the first documented case of tool use in cattle, based on a Swiss Brown cow named Veronika who doesn’t just grab an object and rub it against herself.

She chooses the “right” part of a tool for the job, changes her technique depending on where she’s scratching, and repeats those choices in a way that looks consistent and intentional.
