Welcome!  This is a community to recommend Youtube videos!  Here's some important things to know!

1. Be courteous and civil with one another, even in disagreement.  Maintainers reserve the right to excuse anyone from the community who is continually disruptive or disrespectful of others.

2. Bigotry and hate speech are disallowed here.  This includes in video recs.  Videos that promote hateful ideology (gender critical, anti-LGBTQ+, etc.) are disallowed.

3. Recs that might reasonably be considered dangerous are disallowed.  Some examples would include recs that uncritically present harmful conspiracy theories, or that encourage self harm or the like.

4. If embedding more than one video per post, please put all but one embed under cut.

5.
Feel free to format recs at your discretion!  Drop an embed without elaboration, or provide a review or info on the video if you like!

6. Use our tag system please!  Here is our tag page!  But do not stress if you are unsure of what tags to use—maintainers can tag your post as well if you miss anything.  Some more tag info:

  • length: short is for any video 25 minutes and under
  • length: mid is for videos 26-45 minutes
  • length: long is for any video 46 minutes and over
  • length: extra long is for videos over 2 hours!
  • vibe: food safe refers to any video that is probably safe for most people to watch while eating (i.e. free from things that might ruin a lot of people's appetites such as depictions or discussions of bodily fluids, death, filth, etc.)

6. And finally, use this post to ask questions, request tags, or make suggestions in the comments below! (:

Hello everyone!

I just went through and did some minor updates and housekeeping to the community!

Question for y'all:  should we add a "no self-promotion" rule?  It would mean that we cannot promote our own videos here.  My instinct is yes, but I wanted to check with everyone first on that one!

I've been really enjoying Joov lately! If you don't know him, he makes funny/interesting Skyrim challenge videos! I like his videos not just because they're good, but because he's relaxing to watch. You never know with Youtube gamers...some of them lean right and try to hide it, until they let some bigotry or other slip and then it's just...too uncomfortable to watch them anymore.

But Joov seems chill? Cultural discourse and politics doesn't come up often in his videos, but when they do, he'll openly mock whatever alt-right gamers are currently raging about, and in a recent video, someone in his own community described it as queer-friendly. I dunno, it's just nice to find someone making this kind of content where I don't have to worry about them randomly saying something hateful.

If you're already a knitter this may be old hat to you, but as a non-knitter I enjoyed the discussion of why the act of knitting is so important.

Just a great personal essay by Tim Rogers, maybe more well known for his video game reviews on Youtube. About the time's he was seriously ill while living in Japan, as well as about his personal relationships.

not to stereotype a real person and an accent but this guy talks exactly like how I expected a casino cheating expert to sound lol. but yeah, really interesting video and I love how he explains stuff.

I haven't finished the video yet but not even a 4th of the way in and I already know it's a banger. some fun worldbuilding to chew on for fanworks and the way Krillik talks makes me feel like I'm listening to an actual pokémon researcher in universe.

Really interesting video about the lightfastness of various colored pencil brands!

This is such a sweet and fun video of a old man artist trying out digital art for the first time! He gets so excited about the features and what he can do in the program and it's a delight to watch. And what he draws is amazing, I especially love how he did the trees. There's English subs in the closed captions too.

I found this video through a web blog talking about it and WOW the drama? The skills? I have no particular affection towards hockey the actual sport but I was at the edge of my seat watching this and there's a lot of silly moments as well! What a delightful little video! (also, note the in game chat in the upper left!)

I would make this video required watching for everyone in the entire world, if I could. It discusses over why they literally don't make things like they used to, and why so many products are so shit nowadays, with multiple real-world examples throughout (including one I had never even thought about before I watched this video). Not only that, it explains what you can do about it.

Fair warning: this video is a "part 1", which isn't clearly advertised in the video title, and part 2 has yet to release. However, I wanted to share it because it still contains a lot of damning evidence about how the popular extension, Honey, steals from creators, and purposefully gives their customers worse coupon codes while telling them it's the best one available, to stop them for searching for better ones. Among other things. I highly recommend giving it a watch, even if you've never had the extension installed, as it's pretty interesting to see these scummy practices in action.

It all stops being surprising once you remember Honey is owned by PayPal, though. :P

Posting another old share from my Sunday YouTube Spotlights!

This video is about news on the older side (relatively)! I feel like it did a great job summarizing why, exactly, Watcher's proposed streaming service received such a violently negative reaction in comparison to other streaming services started by YouTubers. (I feel like most people are sick to death of streaming services in general by now, though, lol)

I do a thing on my journal called "YouTube Sunday Spotlight", where I recommend a YouTube video essay that I watched that week! I thought this might fit well into this community, so here's a video I've highlighted!

This is all about Spotify's playlists and shuffle mode, and why it feels like it's never actually randomized. This question drove me up the wall whenever I listened to Spotify, so this video answered a ton of my questions.

Lindsay Ellis knocks it out of the park with this, as always, and I'm glad she made it available on YouTube (albeit censored in places it originally wasn't).

I've recently been really enjoying watching videos made by this artist! They typically do watercolors (with some fantastic and very distinctive shading on most their works) and in this recent video they added some thicker paints into the mix. I thought the end result was absolutely stunning! :D

The video essay that got me into video essays. A thoughtful analysis of the intricacies of a walking sim about family and death.

I love this animated art about the internet I grew up with. It gave me a beautiful burst of nostalgia, knowing that some of my favourite internet experiences were widely shared.
